> Even though, though, despite,
although, in spite of mempunyai arti sama, yaitu meskipun / meski. tetapi
penggunaanya dalam sebuah kalimat terdapat perbedaan although, though and even though
adalah konjungsi atau kata hubung, sedangkan in spite of and despite adalah
kata depan. jadi penggunaanya:
in spite of + noun/kata benda
despite + noun/kata benda
although + klausa
though + klausa
even though + klausa
even though, though, although
POLA= even though / though / although + klausa
klausa merupakan anak kalimat yang
‘memenuhi’ syarat sebagai kalimat (jadi minimal harus ada sebuah subjek dan
predikatnya)
Although and though sama dalam
penggunaanya. Though lebih umum digunakan dalam pembicaraan atau tulisan
informal, although lebih formal tapi although dapat digunakan dalam hal yang
lebih luas.
* ‘Our new neighbours are
quite nice, though their dog is a bit of a nuisance.’
* ‘She insisted on keeping
her coat on, although it was extremely warm in the house as the central heating
was on.’
* ‘Although she was
commended for completing the Millennium Dome project on time and within budget,
management felt that it was now time for a new person with different talents to
take over.
Eventhough digunakan untuk
memberikan penekanan, atau dalam kondidi yang tertekan:
* ‘I managed to get good
results in my exams, even though I went out four times a week when I was
supposed to be revising.’
Beberapa Tips untuk membedakan (tapi
ga selalu)
Even though — ketika kondisi yang ada negatif, tapi hasilnya positif
eg — Even though Ram hadn’t studied, he passed the exam.
Although — ketika kondisi yang ada
positif, namun hasilnya negatif
eg — Although Ram had studied very hard, he did not score well.
despite dan inspite of
POLA= despite / inspite of + noun
* ‘Despite the appalling weather,
they succeeded in walking to the top of Ben Nevis.’
* ‘They decided to get
married in spite of the huge differences in their ages.’
Kesimpulan: despite and although:
arti sama, beda penggunaan. bandingkan:
* ‘Although it was raining
heavily, we finished the game of football.’
* ‘We finished the game of
football in spite of the heavy rain.’
* ‘Despite his strong
Welsh accent, we understood most of what he was saying.’
* ‘Even though he had a
strong Welsh accent, we understood most of what he was saying.’
Tambahan
Meski despite and in spite of normalnya digunakan sebagai kata depan, tapi
ketiganya dapat juga digunakan dalam adverbial dengan -ing, seperti:
* ‘I managed to pass my
exams, despite going out four times a week during the revision period.’
* ‘In spite of feeling
terribly sick, I went to work every day that week.’
* ‘Despite being severely
handicapped, he managed to complete the race.’
